Meet the Author

In June, Pastor Jim began a series of messages on the New Testament book of James. But who is this person named “James” who wrote the book?

Jesus had two separate disciples with that name. The better known was James the son of Zebedee, brother of the apostle John. But Jesus also had another disciple referred to as James the son of Alphaeus. (See Matthew 10: 2-4.) However, neither of these men is thought to the writer of this letter.

The Bible records that Jesus had several brothers who were presumably later children born to Mary & Joseph (see Matthew 13:55). The oldest of these was named James, and he is the one most likely to have written this letter.

While James was evidently not a follower of Christ during the time of his ministry, he was a witness to the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:7) and soon became the leader of the church in  Jerusalem.  Though  not  one of the

original disciples, he was nonetheless considered an apostle (see Galatians 1: 19). He is believed to have been stoned to death by the Jews around AD 62.

In 2002, archaeologists were amazed by the discovery of a first century burial box with the inscription (in Hebrew) “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus.” It may once have contained the bones of James himself.

James’ thoughts are best known to us through the New Testament book that bears his name. The pastor’s remaining messages in this series are:

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of missions.          In May and June, $405.25 was collected for the Pregnancy Support Center; $141 was received for Asian Disasters and $374 for the Gideons.

In August we will have our bi-annual collection of Seat Covers for All God’s Children. This very important campaign provides clean new underwear for needy infants, youth and children. Our Tuscarawas District has been asked to focus on T-Shirts, briefs and socks for boys ages 13-16 (adult small, medium, large & XL). You can bring in the requested items or you may make a monetary gift. Please note: All items must be new and still in the original packaging. Please help us provide these “bare necessities” to children/ youth in need.

Church Conference is November 9

This year Trinity’s fall Church Conference will be held on Sunday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on 6th Street SW (near Aultman Hospital). This will be a “cluster” conference with the five other churches in our “compass group” and will be presided over by our district superintendent, Rev. Kurt Landerholm. Make sure to put this date on your calendar now.

Thank you to everyone who brought in pantry items for Canton Calvary Mission. A total of 260 rolls of toilet paper were received in June and 176 cans of soup were received in July. For the month of August, we are collecting all kinds of pasta. Remember, our Program Committee has designated the third Sunday of each month as the collection day. Thus, we’re asking you to please bring in pasta on Sunday, August 17th and place it in the ground floor foyer or upstairs at the information table. Thank you!

Many thanks to our church family for your cards, calls, food, and most of all your prayers during our grief over the loss of  our son.

A big thank you to the U.M.W. for the prayer shawl and the great dinner following David’s service.

The outpouring of love and support from all of you was, and is still, very comforting.

Last, but not least, thank you Pastor Jim and Lila for the wonderful eulogy and tribute to our son.

Sincerely,

The Ulmer Family

A group of ladies, Chuck John, and Ernest Ball have deep cleaned the church one room at a time.  The ladies were:  Audrey Fish, Nancy McCartney, Donna Young, & Gayle Ulmer.  Thank you all!

The front yard of the church was planted with flowers & weeded.  The job is not finished, but God bless you all for the time you have put in so far.

Thank you, Seekers for replacing the flags in front of the church.

There are not enough words to express my appreciation to so many people that made my retirement special. First I want to thank the choir for the generous gift they gave me and  their loyalty and faithful service throughout the years. Janet has brought her own special talent and humor. We called her the "party girl" as she liked to  have fun and so did we.  Also, a thank you to Pastor Jim , Janet and Rebecca for adjusting to my scheduling changes. A big thank you to the Seekers class for their special gift. I'd like to thank the PPR for organizing the reception in my honor. Thanks to Margaret Cassidy, Dave Huntsman, Larry Ford, Pat Dougherty and Gayle Ulmer for their work in the kitchen. Thanks to all of you for coming on that stormy Sunday afternoon and for  the greeting cards with their messages.

In Christian love,

Roy

Margaret and John Cassidy hosted a picnic in honor of the choir. There were about 35 of us huddled in their garage as the weather was very chilly.  Thankfully, it was not raining. John was busy grilling hot dogs and hamburgers, along with shredded beef sandwiches and many other goodies. The entertainment was reminiscing about our years in the choir. What fun that was! While we were recalling the years, John was in the kitchen cleaning up. What a dear! We, the choir and guests, appreciated the Cassidy's hospitality.

With love,

The Choir

*The Garden of the Soul*

There is a Garden of the Soul,
Where God plants loving seeds
That faith and grace will nourish
Into blooms of loving deeds.
Within this Garden of the Soul
Fruits of the Spirit grow;
And they produce new seeds of love
Which you and I can sow.

Prayers and Poems

On a pleasant and windy morning eleven Pathfinders met at  P. Graham Dunn's wood carving show room for a tour. The history of the company is very interesting and we enjoyed a family member telling the story. Their show room has hundreds of items with a religious theme that can be personalized. We later moved on to Das Dutch Kitchen for lunch and more fellowship.
