Easter Week 2008

The days that lead up to Easter Sunday are a special time for Christians. In addition to our usual Sunday worship services, we also offer two additional opportunities:

Holy Thursday (March 20) –

On the night before he was crucified, Jesus ate the Passover meal with his disciples on what we now call “Holy” or “Maundy” Thursday. It was on this night that he instituted the Lord’s Supper.

In similar fashion, we’ll eat together in the fellowship hall at 6:30 tonight. A meat and cheese tray will be provided; you’re invited to bring    a salad, side dish or dessert to share, along with your own table service

Following the meal, our praise team will lead us in an informal time of singing, making use of both contemporary and traditional music. Our time together will close with the observance of Holy Communion.

Good Friday (March 21) –

Good Friday is the day we remember and mediate upon the crucifixion of our Savior, Jesus Christ. This year, our worship will take the form of a Tenebrae service (Latin for darkness) and will begin at 7:30 p.m. This service, which dates back to the twelfth century, is characterized by     a progressive extinguishing of candles as the passion account is read. The Chancel Choir will participate in tonight’s worship.

Easter Sunday (March 23)

This is the grandest and greatest Sunday of the year! The pastor and our talented musicians are gearing up to make both of our worship services (9:45 & 11:00) a glorious experience. Pastor Jim’s message will be entitled “Experience Freedom this Easter!” based on Colossians 1:14—“Christ bought our freedom with his blood…” Easter comes early this year, so don’t forget. In fact, why not invite a friend to attend with you? Christ is risen from the dead! Hallelujah!

Financial Peace University

Do you ever have more month than money left at the end of the month?  Do your credit card balances keep creeping up?  Do you ever wish you had better control of your money?  Do you ever wish you could give more money to God’s work, but are too broke to give it?  If you struggle with the management of your money, our church will be offering a course to help you out. The course is called Financial Peace University (FPU) by personal money management expert, Dave Ramsey.

The training course lasts for 13 weeks, with one session each week.  The class is taught by Dave Ramsey, via DVD, followed by a small group discussion.  Each session will typically last 2 hours with one hour of video and 1 hour of small group discussion.  The DVD portion will be shown in fellowship hall. The course will be held on Monday evenings at 7:00 starting on March 31st. Amy Ciesielczyk will be the FPU coordinator.

Cost of the course is $99.51 per family unit. A family unit typically consists of a single adult individual, a married couple (with teenage children living with their parents) or an engaged couple.  Literature about the course states that the average family pays off $5,300 and saves $2,700 during the 13 week period! Make the small investment to put yourself on the road to financial control!  If you just can’t come up with $100, some members have graciously offered to supplement the cost by paying a portion of the fee; see Amy Ciesielczyk if you need this extra help.  Listen for upcoming announcements and details.  A Free Preview meeting will be held on Palm Sunday, March 16th, at 6 p.m.  If you have any questions please call Amy Ciesielczyk at 330-837-3774.

Outreach for Easter

On Sunday afternoon, March 9th, a number of people from Trinity will meet together to distribute door-hangers to the homes surrounding our church. The plan is to go in pairs, spending 1-2 hours each. The “hangers” we’ll be leaving on the doors will invite people to attend our services on Easter Sunday. A light lunch will be provided in the fellowship hall at 12:15, prior to our departure. Anyone from the congregation is invited to join us in this project. If you can help, please speak to Bob or Charlotte Fowler or to Stephanie Houck.

Easter is early this year…

Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.

Based on the above information, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) and that is rare.

Here's the interesting information.

This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives!  Only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early.  None of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier! Here's why:

1) The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now).  The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if you're 95 or older, you are the only ones that were around for that!).

2) The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now).  The last time it was on March 22 was 1818 so; no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!

We want to thank the Pathfinder class and Trinity friends for their prayers and cards sent in regard to the deaths of our granddaughter (age 20) and our daughter-in-law (age 55). Losing loved ones is very hard, but your prayers and thoughts were so uplifting.  Thank you so much.

A huge thank you for all the Christmas cards.  Each day we opened some cards together and read every word.  We rally enjoyed all the personal messages.  You certainly brought joy to Dick and me.  A month later, Dick left for his new home in heaven with our Lord.  There was such an outpouring of sympathy by way of cards, phone calls, and visits from our church members.  We were overwhelmed with such caring from you, that our faith and stamina carried us through our grief.  The United Methodist Women serves us a scrumptious lunch.  (Dick always said that he thought God would provide macaroni and cheese and fresh strawberries every day in heaven, so we hope he’s stuffing himself.)  Thank you all very much for your support and love.

Ramen Noodles

for Canton Calvary Mission

Thank you to everyone who brought in pantry items for Canton Calvary Mission. A total of 77 jars of peanut butter were received. For the month of March, we are collecting ramen noodles. Remember, our Program Committee has designated the third Sunday of each month as the collection day. Thus, we’re asking you to please bring in ramen noodles on Palm Sunday, March 16th and place them in the ground floor foyer or upstairs at the information table. Thank you!

Easter Offering

Is March Missions Focus

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of missions.          In January, a total of $261 was received for Perry High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

In March, our focus will be on our annual Easter Offering, supporting the missions work of the United Methodist Church through our World Service Fund and Conference Benevolences. The former supports missions work worldwide, while the latter is used for local projects throughout our conference. You can have a part in this work by placing      a special gift in our missions barrel, designating a pink “special offering” envelope, or returning the special “Easter Offering” envelope packaged with your boxed offering envelopes

Zimmerman’s to Host Tour

of Paul’s Missionary Journeys

On November 5, 2008, Pastor Jim and Janet will be departing on a ten-day tour of Paul’s 2nd & 3rd missionary journeys, and they would love to have you join them! This is a cruise!          Our chartered cruise ship will take us from one site to another in Greece and Turkey, traveling along the Mediterranean Sea. Among the cities we’ll visit are Athens (Mars Hill and the incomparable Acropolis), Corinth, Philippi, Pergamum, Ephesus, Miletus and the Island of Patmos (where John wrote Revelation). Also traveling with us will be Bishop Will Willimon, who will be speaking on the topic of “What Paul Believed.” Your air fare, tours, meals and ship cabin are all included in one all-inclusive price, beginning at $2,098/person (based on double occupancy). We invite you to join us for an informational meeting in Trinity’s fellowship hall on Sunday, March 2nd, to watch a promotional video and receive some literature.  Alternately, if you can’t come on Sunday, you’re welcome to join us at Church of the Lakes on Tuesday, March 4th, at 7 p.m. There is, of course, no obligation.

Parsonage Fire

Fortunately for us, it wasn't our parsonage, but it's a tragedy nonetheless. On Tuesday, February 12, a fire broke out at the parsonage of the Canton Korean United Methodist Church. Rev. and Mrs. Jaiseong Pi, and their three sons (ages 9, 7, & 4), were aroused by the frantic ringing of the doorbell. They escaped from the house with only the clothes on their backs. The fire did not destroy the house, but it is estimated that it will take 6-7 months to repair. All of their personal contents were lost by the  fire and/or smoke and water damage. While the house was insured, their personal property was not. They will receive nothing for personal losses. They are presently in a local motel, but temporary housing will need to be secured soon. Their immediate need is for cash. Donations may be sent to Trinity, designated "Korean pastor." We will forward all money received to the District Office for distribution. Please also keep this family in your prayers.

Happy Birthday & Happy Anniversary to all of you!!

There’s More!

On the first Easter morning, three women found an empty tomb. The discovery left them trembling and afraid. They didn’t know there was

more — a resurrected Lord.

Later that day, the risen Jesus appeared. As happy as the disciples were about this miracle, they didn’t yet know there was more — a gift of the Holy Spirit that would make their

joy complete.

Early Christians in Corinth were so delighted by the gift of baptism that they could scarcely imagine there was more — the resurrection of the body

to eternal life.

As great as Easter is, it’s only the “first fruits” of what lies ahead. Celebrate the fact that Christ is risen, but remember that the best is yet to come!

Easter Card List

It’s time to remember our Trinity friends who are unable to attend church regularly.  The cards will be delivered, so no need for addresses.  Please place your cards in the Foyer by March 16th.

U.M.W. fun Calendar

This year’s fun calendar was made up with daily suggestions made by members of the United Methodist Women.  At our meeting in December, I asked everyone to write down their suggestion for the Fun Calendar.  I used every one that was suggested!  It’s true; some of them will “put you in the poor house”.  We do hope you enjoyed doing them and raising money for our organization.  After completing the calendar, please turn your money in to our Treasurer, Jo Ann Yourkoski.  Much thanks to all who participated!

Lila Graham, Vice President

United Methodist Women

It was a blustery evening, but seventeen women met for the February meeting of the United Methodist Women.

During the Business portion, a motion was approved to get estimates to carpet the first floor entryway, women’s restroom, hallway, and library.  Ruth Miller and Beverly Cain are in charge of getting estimates.  Ruth Miller, our Representative to the Massillon Church Women United, passed around a paper to sign up to bring articles for two “Health Kits”.  A motion was approved to donate $100 to the Korean Pastor’s family who lost everything in a recent home fire.

Janet Zimmerman presented our “Prayer and Self Denial” program.  With the aid of Jim, she presented three videos showing the projects of three different places where the United Methodist Women’s support is being used.

Alma Parsons, Chairperson of Group 2, led the group in presenting various Valentine stories.  Some brought special Valentines to share with the group.  Elaine Norton read a story about Adam and Eve.

Group 2 served scrumptious chocolate cake at a table adorned with beautiful valentine decorations and lovely real flowers.  Elaine Norton provided a glass angel figurine for each of us to take home.
