CHANCEL CHOIR DIRECTOR

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Ability to relate to a wide range of individuals in a warm and friendly manner.

 

  1. Musical skills, including the ability to read and direct music.

 

  1. A self-motivated individual with good organizational skills.

 

  1. A team player who is able to work well with other musicians and also with the pastor.

 

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

The choir director is responsible for leading the choir in the performance of one musical selection per week, September through May, during the traditional Sunday worship service. Exception: The choir does not sing on the first Sunday of the month.

 

The choir director is under the direct supervision of the pastor and is responsible to the staff-parish relations committee. Terms of employment are “at will” and may be terminated by either party with a minimum thirty day notice.

 

 

DUTIES

 

  1. Select and purchase music and supplies for the chancel choir, in cooperation with the pastor and within the constraints of the church budget.

 

  1. Enlist and cultivate members for the chancel choir.

 

  1. Conduct regular rehearsals at a time mutually acceptable to the director, organist and choir members. Communicate all such rehearsal times to the church secretary, always working within the constraints of the church calendar.

 

  1. Provide the church secretary with the title of the choir selection in advance of each service for inclusion in the worship program. This information needs to be in the church office no later than the preceding Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.

 

  1. Lead the chancel choir in performances at special services which may be requested throughout the year, e.g., Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday or Good Friday.

 

 

HOURS

 

It is expected that the chancel choir director will be present for each weekly rehearsal and for the full worship service each time the choir performs. Beyond this, hours are at the discretion of the director, provided that his/her duties are performed satisfactorily.

 

If the director needs to be absent for either a rehearsal or a performance, s/he must secure a qualified substitute and remunerate for same.

 

 

SALARY

 

Performance and salary will be reviewed annually by the staff-parish relations committee. The SPR committee will propose a salary figure to the church conference (or council) for adoption.
